Why do umpires grunt
Callum Hughson has written for Mopupduty. Thanks for researching this topic I always wondered why umpires are so animated compared to referees in other north American sports. It makes one wondered Iis MLB employing the best umpires when they must do a song and dance to get noticed? Speaking of getting noticed why hasnt an umpire try screaming out something incoherent when it is a ball instead of a strike.
I always thought they are bias to the pitcher because they only show enthusiam when the pitcher is getting closer to striking out a batter. As a grown woman, Sharapova's grunts have exceeded decibels, which might make her the loudest grunter of all time, though there is no official record.
She used to say that grunting was just something she had done since a young age. It was part of her tennis technique.
Trying to stop grunting when she was in her twenties would have been as challenging as trying to hold the racquet with a new grip. It was always fascinating, though, to listen to her practice sessions, when she would be completely silent; she only grunted when she was playing matches. Seles has said she grunted from the age of eight, and that she didn't suddenly start as a pro. Just like every other aspect of tennis, younger players look at the elites and want to emulate what they're doing.
If grunters are winning Grand Slams, children and teenagers are also going to make some noise. When that generation then reaches the top of the sport, the cycle begins again. Martina Navratilova is among those who have taken a hard line about grunting - she has called it "cheating, pure and simple". While professional players can be punished for grunting if the umpire believes they're deliberately trying to put off their opponents, that hardly ever happens. Sharapova has said in the past that she would be supportive of tennis taking a stronger stance against grunters, but that they should be educating younger players.
Once you've been grunting for years, Sharapova was saying, it can be very hard to press mute. Sometimes we need different signals for out and strike.
Therefore, many umpires decide to call strikes by pointing with their right hand instead of with a fist. By doing this their strike calls are different from out calls. While some unions are weak, the most idiotic move by any professional sports union has to be the Major League Umpires Association MLUA in their mass resignation that eventually led to the end of the union and cost 22 member umpires their jobs.
